Action on the social determinants of tuberculosis: are social protection interventions the way forward?
MOVING BEYOND THE TB BOX
In 2009 Mario Raviglione, Director of the Stop TB Department of the WHO, suggested that better tuberculosis control required investment not only in diagnostics, treatment, and health systems but also in development initiatives addressing the social determinants of tuberculosis, including social protection interventions (such as cash transfer programmes). However, practical ideas for action are still scarcer than is notional support for this approach. This symposium will explore how this agenda should be taken forward.
Speakers include: David Heymann (HPA), Mario Raviglione (WHO), Knut Lonroth (WHO), Amanda Glassman (CGD), Candace Miller (UB), Renos Vakis (WB), Peter Godfrey-Faussett (LSHTM), Diana Weill (WHO), Paul Thorn (TBAlert), Draurio Barreira (NTP Brazil), Elizabeth Lutge (UCT), Carlton Evans (IFHAD), Aamir Khan (IRD, Lasha Goduadze (IRC), Salmaan Keshavjee (PIH)
