The Research Councils UK (RCUK) is commissioning a new interdisciplinary programme of research on resilience and vulnerability to seismic and volcanic-related natural hazards.

Closing date: 7 October 2010

The joint programme is being led by UKCDS members, the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and the Economic & Social Research Council (ESRC) as a contribution to the RCUK 'Global Uncertainties' programme.

The new £7m investment will support interdisciplinary, basic, applied and strategic research and will include an important element of capacity building in the first year of funding.

The RCUK invites proposals from eligible UK researchers for first round scoping study awards. The aim of these small studies is to allow potential consortium groups to identify research gaps in seismic and volcanic hazards.

This could comprise of mapping the current research and community landscape, building cross-disciplinary working and engaging with local communities.

The findings of these projects will inform and shape the research programme's second funding opportunity, which will be commissioned in 2011.

Projects are expected to last up to a maximum of four months. A maximum of £30k is available for each successful award; £200k is available in total for this first stage of the programme.
