UKCDS Chair named as Europe's new scientific adviser

Congratulations to Professor Anne Glover, UKCDS Chair since 2009, who has been named as the new Chief Scientific Adviser to the European Union. Professor Glover's new role will involve providing scientific advice to EU policy makers, as well as acting as a science ambassador to the EU.

UKCDS DIrector, Dr Andrée Carter, welcomes the appointment of Professor Glover to this important position. "Anne Glover's inclusive and enthusiastic style of leadership has contributed greatly to the success of UKCDS and I am sure it will be of great benefit to the EU science community. We wish Anne all the best in her new endeavour."

European Commission president, Jose Manuel Barroso, personally interviewed candidates for the two-year-old post. Mr Barroso said he was delighted to have appointed Anne Glover to the post, saying "I believe her outstanding background and calibre will bring invaluable expertise to the Commission. She has a strong track record in leading the Scottish Science Advisory Committee which made her the stand-out candidate for this post."

Anne Glover is currently Chief Scientific Adviser to the Scottish Government, on the Council of NERC and Chair in Molecular and Cell Biology at the University of Aberdeen’s Institute of Medical Sciences. She will move to Brussels to take up the three-year post with the EU, but retain links with the university and its lab research programme into the mechanics of ageing diesases, such as dementia.
