International support for Africa's new science funding platform
African leaders and international funders have voiced their support of a new African science funding platform set to be launched this summer.
The Alliance for Accelerating Excellence in Science in Africa is a pan-African platform which aims to strengthen the long-term development of research leadership, scientific excellence and innovation that impact on Africa’s developmental challenges.
The Wellcome Trust, the Gates Foundation and the Department for International Development (DFID) are funding the development of AESA and share their vision of supporting the next generation of outstanding African researchers, who will help solve some of the continent’s greatest health and development issues.
The AESA platform is being led by the African Academy of Sciences and the New Partnership for Africa's Development. It will, among other things, identify challenges that hinder rapid scientific advancement in Africa, run open calls for proposals with transparent review processes, actively manage grants and evaluate and measure the impact of such investments.
A formal launch of AESA is planned to coincide with the next AU summit in June 2015 in South Africa.
