Making science work for development

The Fourth EU-Africa Summit

24 April 2014

The 4th EU-Africa Summit 2-3 April 2014, brought together more than 60 EU and African leaders, and a total of 90 delegations, to discuss the future of EU-Africa relations and reinforce links between the two continents.

In the summit declaration, leaders highlighted the close nature of EU-Africa relations and the shared values of democracy, respect for human rights, the rule of law and good governance as well as the right to development.

Their theme "Investing in People, Prosperity and Peace", addressed common challenges and how to bring concrete benefits to citizens in accordance with the Joint Africa-EU Strategy (JAES). Research, science, technology and innovation are specifically mentioned in paragraphs 30-32 of the Declaration and section 3 of the Road Map.

The EU-Africa High Level Policy Dialogue (HLPD) on Science, Technology and Innovation will be the key platform in the JAES for priority-setting and implementation design. UKCDS represents the BIS International Knowledge and Innovation Unit on the Bureau of the EU-Africa HLPD, a panel of representatives from science or education ministries from 10 EU and African countries, co-chaired by the EU and African Union Commission representatives.
