Department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS)

The department's role is to create policy critical to grow the economy, from higher education, skills and science to innovation, enterprise and business.

BIS is a member of UKCDS and is represented at Board level by Jeremy Clayton, Deputy Head of the Government Office for Science. 
 
BIS aims:

  • Foster a world-class science and knowledge base
  • Promote world class science and innovation in the UK
BIS was created in June 2009 by the merger of the Department of Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS) and the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR).

The Government Office for Science (GO-Science), headed by the Chief Scientific Adviser, John Beddington, sits within BIS.
 

The International and Science Innovation Unit within BIS has responsibility for promoting and coordinating science and innovation activities in emerging economies.
