Chris Whitty was appointed Chief Scientific Adviser and Head of Research at DFID in March 2009.

He is a qualified medical doctor with degrees in medicine, economics, law and epidemiology.

In addition to his DFID role, Professor Whitty is professor of international health at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.
 
During the past five years he has been involved in clinical, social and economic research in Afghanistan, Angola, Ghana, Malawi, Pakistan, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda and Yemen.
