Professor Duncan Wingham was appointed Chief Executive of NERC in January 2012. He is Professor of Climate Physics at University College London, and was the first Director of the NERC Centre for Polar Observation & Modelling. He is also Principal Scientist of the European Space Agency (ESA) CryoSat-2 Satellite Mission, the first ESA Earth Sciences satellite selected through open, scientific competition.

Prof. Wingham was educated at Leeds and Bath Universities where he gained BSc and PhD in Physics. From 1986 he has been at University College London, where he held lecturing posts at the Mullard Space Science Laboratory and the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering. He was appointed to a Chair in the Department of Space and Climate Physics in 1996, and to Head of Department of the Department of Earth Sciences in October 2005.

Commenting on his appointment, Professor Wingham said, "It is an honour to be offered the role of NERC Chief Executive. Environmental science lies increasingly at the heart of many of the challenges and opportunities that face us today, and NERC must continue to play a leading role in developing this science, and ensuring the widest possible impact of its work".
