The Department for International Development (DFID)'s first research report highlights 26 case studies which demonstrate immediate and long-term impact on poverty reduction.

The report covers progress across the major research themes of Human Development, Agriculture, Growth, Conflict and Social Development, and Climate and Environmental Change. It illustrates how investments in research provide long-term value for money by identifying the most effective technologies, interventions, and practices to improve international development results.

Examples of how research is contributing to the achievement of the UN’s Millenium Development Goals (MDGs) are given. One case study details collaborative research with the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) on zero tillage. This agricultural practice, involving the direct seeding of wheat into rice paddy fields, has resulted in higher yield gains and lower running costs particularly in the Northwest regions of India.
