The Nairobi Report

Frameworks for Africa-UK Research Collaboration in the Social Sciences and Humanities
March 2009

Cover of The Nairobi ReportProduced by the British Academy and the Association of Commonwealth Universities The Nairobi Report is the culmination of a two-year process of reflection and discussion amongst UK and African scholars across the humanities and social sciences.

It draws on an extensive survey of the African university community, and on the discussions of a conference in Nairobi which brought together diverse parties involved in research development in Africa, including the UKCDS secretariat.

The 40-page report explores the issue facing Africa-UK research collaborations in the humanities and the social sciences and suggests practical solutions to these with 22 recommendations based on three core areas:

  • Institutional foundations – improving structures, systems and governance
  • Communities and networks – forging collaboration within Africa
  • Investing in individuals – the early research career
