Energy Programme

The UK Energy Programme is investing more than £530 million in research and skills to pioneer a low carbon future.

The energy programme aims to support a strong research portfolio in sustainable power generation and supply, and grow the portfolio in demand reduction, alternative energy vectors, transport, security of supply, research capacity building and international engagement.

It brings together:

  • Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) (leading the programme)
  • Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC)
  • Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC)
  • Natural Environment Research Council (NERC)
  • Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC)

The cross research council programmes on energy and environmental change will position the UK to develop and exploit sustainable, low carbon energy efficient technologies and systems to enable it to meet energy and environmental targets by 2020.
